Art History Lecture: Great Houses and their Gardens
Join ProArtium and Northampton Museum and Art Gallery with their second lecture in the series exploring the work of five artists, and today looks at Major Stockdale's Garden at Mears Ashby by R.W. Loveday. One of the Royal Academy's headline exhibitions in 2016 was Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse, a celebration of art works made by artists who were also known to have been dedicated gardeners. The exhibition examined how each of the featured artists was inspired by, and responded to, the private world of calm, colour and beauty they created. This tradition in art can be traced back to the seclusion and sanctity of the medieval hortus conclusus (enclosed garden). Join us on a journey of light, colour, bloom and blossom, as we invite works in the collection of Northampton Museum and Art Gallery to lead us up various artistic garden paths.
