Creating an award-winning adaptive garden for Horatio’s Garden

Creating an award-winning adaptive garden for Horatio’s Garden

Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg are co-founders of Harris Bugg Studio, a values-driven and award winning landscape design practice. Together they have won six gold medals, two silver gilts and two best in shows at RHS shows. Most recently their design for spinal injuries charity Horatio’s Garden won Best in Show at RHS Chelsea 2023, and was the first garden on Main Avenue to put the priorities of all those with different mobility needs at its heart. They have been called ‘pioneering design talents of their generation’ by the RHS and every garden they make is informed by a commitment to exceptional design, connecting people with nature and an inventive and careful use of materials and plants. Storytelling is also at the heart of the studio approach, weaving narratives and stories of place into their work.

In this KMIS lecture, Charlotte and Hugo will share how they have responded to extensive patient consultation to create a garden that responds to accessibility requirements and makes no compromise in its design and planting approach. This garden won Best in Show at RHS Chelsea 2023 and is being relocated and enlarged at the Northern General Hospital Sheffield.
