Great Lives - Garden design from Le Notre to Harold Peto
Great Lives - notable garden designers from Le Notre to Harold Peto. Course run by Alison Moller, hosted by Writtle College. André Le Nôtre (1613-1700) was one of the most important garden designers in Louis XIV’s France and examples of his work at Versailles and Vaux-le-Vicomte will be studied. The exiled royal court of Charles II was greatly impressed by his work. George London (1640-1714) and Henry Wise (1653-1738) interpreted this style for the English setting and various restored or recreated gardens will be used to illustrate this point. Lancelot Brown (1716-1783) and Humphry Repton’s (1752-1818) lives will be examined with attention drawn to some of the earlier gardens and ideas which shaped their thinking. Two lesser-known designers will be given attention - William Andrews Nesfield’s (1793-1881) work exemplified the return of the formal garden and Harold Peto’s (1854-1933) elegant gardens in England and Ireland will be highlighted.
