Gendered landscapes: equity in the public realm

Gendered landscapes: equity in the public realm

As segregation and inequality increase in cities around the world, inclusiveness in the planning process and community involvement is becoming even more important. Safety, inclusivity, and representation in public spaces is a matter for all citizens. Adopting a gender equality approach to place shaping means raising awareness of questions of power in public spaces, male violence towards women and how cities are perceived in terms of violence, security, and accessibility. Redesigning space, rethinking heights and daylight, including rounded edges, gradual gradients, artwork and maximum transparency, are some of the physical changes that can transform how people use and feel in public spaces.
This webinar will hear from speakers joining from the UK and Sweden to discuss how a gender equality-based approach is re-shaping cities. This event is part of the NLA City Dialogue programme that connects cities from across the globe in order to exchange information, discuss and debate shared urban issues, and compare approaches.
