FOLAR talks - Women in Landscape Architecture: Brenda Colvin

FOLAR talks - Women in Landscape Architecture: Brenda Colvin

Brenda Colvin was a seminal influence in landscape architecture, designer and plants woman, working across an enormous range of projects. Hal Moggridge will speak about his former partner, Brenda Colvin. After working for a short time for Madeline Agar, Brenda started her practice in 1922. Until 1939 her work was largely private gardens in the Arts & Crafts style with a special strength in plant knowledge about which she regularly wrote in the ILA magazine. After 1945 she shared her office with Sylvia Crowe and became the landscape consultant for numerous large scale institutional and campus projects, while still designing private gardens. She wrote two seminal books in 1947 and 1948, 'Trees for Town & Country’ and ‘Land & Landscape’. To perpetuate her thriving practice she took Hal Moggridge into partnership in 1969 and some of the projects she initiated were completed by Colvin & Moggridge. She was a strong supporter of the Institute of Landscape Architects, serving continuously on Council for 47 years from 1929, when she was a founder member, until 1976. In 1951 she was elected president, the first woman president of any design or environmental profession.
