Tree Talks - Trees in the Urban Environment
First in a series of four inter-related talks, Yorkshire Gardens Trust members, Dr Jan Woudstra and Dr Camilla Allen from the University of Sheffield, explore various aspects of our relationship with trees. Jan provides a general background as to the contributions of trees to urban environments, looking at their benefits, now popularly referred to as ecosystem services; how they contribute to our health and wellbeing. It then looks at how trees have been used to structure cities, to express physical thresholds, providing distinct areas with distinct characteristics, but also contribute by creating safer environments. They help to reduce traffic speed, guide and forewarn drivers. This is put in the context of our perception of trees, with cultural and natural values versus the way we monetise trees.
