Unforgettable Gardens - The Indian influence on Gardens of Portugal
Cristina Castel-Brancovwill explore the influence of Indian garden and architectural traditions on mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese Renaissance gardens. These gardens were commissioned by Goan viceroys and members of the Portuguese nobility who had lived in India when the Mughal dynasty was establishing its empire and creating distinctive chahâr-bâgh gardens. Returning home, Lisbon nobles created gardens that celebrated their memories of exotic India, and the influence of Indian garden architecture and water strategies as a way to perpetuate the time they had enjoyed there. The lecture will focus on five existing gardens in and around Lisbon: Penha Verde and the Nuncio Garden in Sintra, Quinta da Bacalhoa and Quinta das Torres in Azeitão and the Fronteira Garden in Lisbon.
