Tree Identification for Beginners
Join the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies with their Wildlife Biologist Mike Fargione and Dutchess Land Conservancy Ecologist Julie Hart for a forest tree identification program for beginners. Wise forest stewardship requires familiarity with the woody plants that grow in your area, and the winter and early spring are great times of the year to learn tree identification! Without leaves on the trees, many other identifying characteristics are easier to see. Participants will learn to recognize common Northeast US trees by their shape, bark patterns, twigs, fruits, and seeds. Attention will also be given to invasive forest pests that threaten these trees. The use of a simple identification key will be demonstrated and common botanical terms explained. This programme is free to all. The event is sponsored by Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies and Dutchess Land Conservancy.
