The Word for World is Forest
The Word for World is Forest: The Politics of Difference and Human-plant World-making in the Far Reaches of the Universe. A talk that is part of a series: Where Plants and People Meet, organised by the South London Botanical Institute in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London
This lecture hosted by Joanne Yao, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Queen Mary University of London, explores the idea of plant life beyond earth. It draws on the works of Ursula Le Guin to examine the role plants play in science and speculative fiction, particularly their role in creating imaginaries of new ethical and political possibilities. The lecture then asks what these imaginaries of nonhuman intelligence can teach us about our own efforts to challenge the human-nonhuman binary all around us here on earth.
Refreshments will be provided and the SLBI garden will be open from 6pm so please feel free to drop by earlier and relax.
