The global and local significance of Mangrove forests

The global and local significance of Mangrove forests

How can mangroves reduce the worldwide effects of global warming and how do they benefit their local economies and ecosystems? Find out as Angie Elwin of Reading University shares her research with us at this KMIS talk. In tropical and subtropical regions, mangrove forests are an important part of a diverse seascape dominated by functionally interlinked ecosystems, including seagrass meadows and coral reefs. These ecosystems are not only highly dependent on each other, but they support the livelihoods and wellbeing of hundreds of millions of people because of the wide range of ecosystem services they provide. Drawing on case studies from coastal Thailand, this talk will focus on the different scales of mangrove benefits to people and nature. It will look at how these forests are crucial for global climate adaptation and resilience because of their ability to store vast amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. In addition, it will focus on the benefits local people perceive from these forests, from fisheries resources and habitat for marine animals to a wide range other cultural, supporting and regulating ecosystem services, such as coastal protection, climate regulation, and the existence of birds, reptiles and mammals.
