Sara Lil Middleton - Plants and people: finding the roots of community
Sara Lil Middleton is a doctoral researcher in plant sciences at the Department of Biology at Oxford University. Her primary research is focused on how drought impacts UK grasslands, and how a changing climate may affect these vital plant communities. She is also involved with multidisciplinary projects looking at the future of nature and agricultural food systems, and founded Black British Biology, a project working to raise the profile of historically excluded minorities in biology.
Our planet is giving us warning signs that its life-support systems are critically unbalanced – will we be able return them to equilibrium? This thought-provoking lecture will look at the interconnected crises of food, climate, and biodiversity. Sara will discuss how rewilding and decolonizing our minds and lands, challenging our beliefs, and reconnecting with our communities may solve these crises. She will share fascinating stories from her plant and environmental science research, as well as how this intersects with her work as a science communicator, writer, and advocate for equality, diversity, and inclusion in biology.
