A Man of the Trees
Landscape and environmental historian, Dr Camilla Allen, will share her research on the life of Richard St. Barbe Baker, founder of the Men of the Trees (now the International Tree Foundation) in anticipation of the organisation's centenary in 2022. Camilla had unique access to the Baker Papers at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada which formed the basis of her thesis and allowed her to rework the established narrative of Baker's early life, whilst creating a new point of engagement for his environmental philosophy. As a society, the Men of the Trees put the planting and protection of trees at the forefront of their activities and were decades ahead of their time in calling for international strategies for forest protection and landscape restoration. Part 3 in Yorkshire Gardens Trust Series Tree Talks.
