The ecology of the streams and rivers of the Cambrian Mountains
Streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and wetlands are among the world’s more important habitats for their species richness, but also the most heavily used and degraded by people. The important services provided by freshwater ecosystems including fish production, water supply, nutrient transport, health benefits and recreational value, are often compromised because they are seldom recognised explicitly in catchment use and planning. Pollution, water supply, physical alteration of channels and climate change all have material effects on water flow and temperature.
As a result, often hidden beneath the water surface, freshwater ecosystems are haemorrhaging biodiversity faster than any other type of ecosystem.
In this webinar, Professor Steve Ormerod will explain the long term studies which he and his team have been carrying out at Llyn Brianne in the centre of the Cambrian Mountains and some of the findings and lessons which have been drawn from those observations so far.
