Community Landscapes - Pioneering the Collective Garden
Gardens Trust talk, Robert Marnock and his work at the Ladbroke Estate, Holland Park, London with Jan Woudstra.
When the Jellicoes published their famous Landscape of Man (1972), they acknowledged the Ladbroke Estate in Holland Park, as being well ahead of its time and ‘a pioneer in combining the small private garden with the private collective garden’. Since it was created, in the middle of the nineteenth century, it has been used as inspiration for housing schemes with communal gardens. There has always been speculation as to where the inspiration for this scheme originated and much speculation as to who was responsible for the design. It can now be proven that it was Robert Marnock (1800-1889) who designed the concept, and it was one of several projects emanating from him that experimented with new ways of living. In each case new forms and arrangements were experimented with, of position of buildings on the plot, the arrangement of gardens, the type of vegetation and attempts to unify areas. This talk explores his influences and aspirations.
