The Italian Renaissance Garden - Baroque Gardens of the Late Renaissance
Having reached the limits of rationality and order, the gardens of the late Renaissance, from 1580-1650, reveal a renewed interest in nature. Join the Gardens Trust whilst they discuss the transitional period known as Mannerism, gardens such as Bomarzo and Pratolino revelled in distorted forms which manipulate and exaggerate the ideal beauty of the High Renaissance to produce a tense, unbalanced, artificial style which appeals to the subconscious rather than the conscious mind. In the Baroque period which followed, designers continued taking their inspiration from nature, but in a more tempered and joyful way. Gardens such as Caprarola, Marlia, Garzoni and Cetinale were grand, dramatic and elegant; designed for sensuality and enchantment.
