Changing Landscapes
In this Cresswell Crags talk, Dr Hazel Reade (University College London) looks at what Britain was like when woolly rhino and mammoth roamed the land. What happened to these animal communities and the environment as the ice sheets of the last Ice Age grew and then melted? And what were the implications of these changes for people living in Britain? In this talk we’ll take a look at the archaeological and palaeontological archives that preserve fauna dating to the last Ice Age in Britain. Covering the period between around 35,000 to 12,000 years ago, we’ll discuss what evidence we can get from these records and how it helps us build a picture of how the climate and environment changed, how faunal communities responded to such changes, and how human presence and activities in the landscape shifted.
