Beatrix Farrand: From the Gilded Age to Modernism with Deborah Trentham
Beatrix Farrand (1872-1959) preferred to be called a landscape gardener, although she was the only woman founder of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1899. Farrand was born in New York City and studied landscape gardening, botany and planning under the mentorship of Charles Sprague Sargent, director of the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, MA. Through her family and New York social connections, she received significant commissions including residential and estate gardens, botanic gardens, college campuses and even the White House. This Surrey Gardens Trust talk by Deborah Trentham will give an overview of Farrand as an innovative designer with an incredible horticultural knowledge. We will look at the recent re-evaluation of her work examining her ecological ideologies.
