Wildlife Gardening: UK's Hedgehog Superhighway & Lessons for California

Wildlife Gardening: UK's Hedgehog Superhighway & Lessons for California

The UK hedgehog population has suffered a dramatic decline over the last 10 years. Critical to hedgehog conservation in urban environments is their ability to move through a wider landscape. Stephen Powles, professional wildlife photographer, will introduce the idea of wildlife gardening, and show how his brother, Chris, inspired the villagers of Kirtlington, England to take an interest in their hedgehogs and how they went on to create a “Hedgehog Superhighway” of interconnected gardens.
This talk will describe the nuts and bolts of what it means to design with and for other species and make our homes wildlife friendly. Stephen will focus on hedgehogs in the UK and suggest important parallels with California.
