Keith Wiley’s ‘Wildside’ Devon garden, An Experiment in New Naturalism

Keith Wiley’s ‘Wildside’ Devon garden, An Experiment in New Naturalism

Two years ago, Keith Wiley was described in ‘Gardens Illustrated’ as a “pioneering plantsman”, and Wildside as “the most exciting and innovative garden in Britain today”. He was first known for shaping and enlarging, by 6 acres, The Garden House, where he was head gardener. The result was over 10 acres of stunning gardens, renowned as a plantsman’s paradise.
In 2004, Keith and his wife Ros left The Garden House and began work to create an ambitious new garden, ‘Wildside’, out of a flat, 4 acre site, once a cider orchard. As an exponent of a movement in landscape gardening dubbed ‘new naturalism’, Keith began to bring his vision to life by moving huge amounts of land to create to a wide range of different growing conditions. Ros, an essential part of the gardening team, also provided her own unique contribution as an artist. Photographer Jon Evans explore this unique creative partnership and the garden they created.
