A New Era for Biodiversity Conservation in Tunisia

A New Era for Biodiversity Conservation in Tunisia

Tunisia is home to a large diversity of habitats and ecosystems: discover parts of it with Tunisia's leading group of young ecologists. Tunisia is a hotspot for cultural diversity, a unique region forged by successive civilizations that once flourished in the most northern country of Africa; from Phoenicians to Carthaginians and Amazigh to Arabs.
While this cultural diversity has been and still is the subject of many researchers, the biological heritage of the country remains understudied and unexplored. Except for a few studies conducted during the colonial period - by naturalists such as Henry Normand, Tunisia today has a lot to uncover regarding its native biodiversity.
Four years ago, a group of ecologists have joined hands to form the Tunisian Association for Wildlife (ATVS). Today, over 30 young, multidisciplinary researchers are leading the new wave of biodiversity research.
Over the past 4 years, ATVS has set up multiple projects to study, conserve and raise awareness about biodiversity from oases in the deep Southern desert to the small remote islands on the northern Tunisian coast.
