Landscape architect Sarah Cowles, Director of Ruderal, a ground breaking landscape research and design practice, based in Tbilisi, Georgia.
For over 10 years, Sarah Cowles and her colleagues have conducted landscape research projects in the Caucasus region, including studies of mining landscapes in Kavtiskhevi and Chiatura; alongside heritage conservation and rejuvenation projects within the landscape of the Borjomi-Bakuriani narrow gauge railway corridor. In 2019 Sarah established Ruderal, to transform this research into material and social practice.
In this presentation Sarah will discuss evolving interpretations of the term ruderal, and outline how temporal aspects of planting surface in the studio's projects. They include research interpreting relationships of ecology to health in Imperial and Soviet health resorts; rehabilitating these 19th and 20th century cultural and resort landscapes for contemporary occupation; inserting climate adapted species within the traces of large scale Soviet-design amelioration landscapes; and directing ruderal process on former industrial sites.
